Lower and Upper Elementary

Lower and Upper Elementary

Our Elementary program embodies the fundamental philosophy and principles of Montessori education. Through cooperative social interaction among children of various ages, we foster a sense of friendship, respect for others’ rights, and self-confidence. Our approach nurtures each child’s potential to flourish creatively and fosters a love of learning. Our carefully developed elementary curriculum guides the child through identifying, classifying, and researching all the fascinating concepts in each chosen field of study. The students work with materials for math, geometry, language, and grammar that lead them to the abstraction of the fundamental concepts taught in each area.
Our classrooms are organized into Lower Elementary for ages 6-9 (Grades 1-3) and Upper Elementary for ages 9-12 (Grades 4-6):

Lower Elementary - Grades 1-3

Our Lower Elementary program establishes a solid foundation in all subjects through hands-on learning in our multi-age classroom, encouraging collaboration and exploration. Core subjects like Math, Geometry, Language, and Grammar are taught in small groups or individually. Culture subjects in Geography, History, Zoology and Botany are taught in large groups to promote discussions and collaboration. Children are introduced to research skills and learn how to conduct their own research projects in areas of personal interest. They are encouraged to present their projects to their peers to develop their presentation skills. Technology is not used in Lower Elementary as our students are encouraged to write in cursive and use books to cross reference their research. Practical life skills are taught through baking, projects and in the care for their environment.

Upper Elementary - Grades 4-6

Our Upper Elementary program delves deeper into each subject, encouraging independent inquiry and problem-solving. Students develop critical thinking skills and self-confidence in a supportive, collaborative environment. Core subjects like Math, Geometry, Language, and Grammar are taught in small groups or individually. Culture subjects in Geography, History, Zoology, Botany and Science are taught in large groups to promote discussions and collaboration. Technology is introduced for writing and research projects. Direct instruction is given on Internet safety as well as search skills, site credibility and citing sources. Students in Upper Elementary are often responsible for creating and hosting special events like Remembrance Day, Earth Day and Pride Assemblies. These opportunities allow the students to work on their public speaking abilities and interpersonal skills. We make great attempts to involve the students in their community as “going out” becomes more prevalent at this stage.

Specialties

  • Second Language Elementary students have French classes four days a week. Our French teacher educates the students in their second language through the AIM Language Learning Program that uses gestures along with French to instruct students. Lower Elementary students are given a foundation for oral comprehension and oral production while gradually being introduced to reading and writing. They achieve this through scaffolding techniques which use storytelling, gestures, active collaboration, and repetition. High frequency words are introduced with gestures and given context through stories, drama, songs, and dance. As they advance in age, the Elementary program takes a holistic approach to learning French. Its aims are to prepare students for real life situations by teaching them communication skills, language knowledge such as grammar, vocabulary, and an appreciation for French culture. The goal at FMA is to create a safe and enjoyable opportunity to learn a second language.
  • Visual Arts The Visual Arts program is an integral component of our Montessori curriculum. Art History, Appreciation and Art Production provide meaningful experiences for the students and promote their individual expressions and creativity. In addition to art classes, students are encouraged to illustrate their journals and cultural projects on an ongoing basis.
  • Music, Theatrical Production and Performance Opportunities The music program at the Elementary level is interdisciplinary and involves the development of the children’s awareness and love of music through the study of beat & rhythm, melody, instrumental technique, expression and listening skills. Music is taught by a trained Music for Young Children teacher.
  • All children participate in the annual Winter Concert. In preparation for this performance students participate in music workshops involving basic choral instruction. Other activities promoting music, drama and the arts include attending and inviting local performers of both music and theatre.
  • Physical Education Physical education focuses on conditioning and improving fitness levels rather than athleticism. The students engage in both competitive and non-competitive activities, from basic skills to game experiences. The program provides key lessons to help develop sportsmanship and fair play.
